What does the word "madness" do in the title of the first chapter of Theory of the automatons, languages and computation of Hopcroft, Motwani, Ullman?

The title of the chapter is "Automatons: methods and madness". This title appeared in the second edition and remains in the third edition. In the first edition, the title of the second chapter is "Finite automata and regular expressions".

The word "madness" does not appear anywhere else in the third edition. Why the chapter is called like that? I have not read all the words in chapter one, but there seems to be no explanation.
