SoftShellWeb Turns Black Friday Green With Offers in Taiwan/US/EU! (Taiwan VPS from $30/year, EU/US from $20/year!)

We welcomed SoftShellWeb to LEB back in August.  They gave us a nice spread of offers back then, from 1GB to 6GB, in the EU and US.  Now they’re also offering service in Taiwan!  That’s pretty cool – we don’t see a lot of offers there.  Double cool: they’re doing it at Black Friday prices!  Triple cool: they’re going all-out with their Black Friday celebrations – see office decorations below!

Here are some highlights:

  • Taiwan VPSes starting at $30/year!
  • EU/US VPSes starting at $20/year!

One cool feature of SoftShellWeb is that every month you have service with them, they plant a tree.  Seriously!  You can add 12 trees a year to Mother Earth by hosting with them.  It’s a serious commitment to green hosting and as far as I know, unique in the industry.  You can read more about their green hosting on their web site, and more about them in general in their FAQ.

The are a registered UK firm.  You can find their TOS on their website and you can pay with every form of payment ever devised by humankind: dollars, euros, bartering cows, anything.  I’m only slightly exaggerating…they take: PayPal, Alipay, Debit/Credit Card, BitCoin, UnionPay, WebMoney, Moneta, QIWI, India Netbanking, iDeal, SOFORT Banking, DOKU, DragonPay, Boleto, Banco do Brasil, Alfa-Click, Malaysia e-banking, Pago Fácil, Rapi Pago, Red Pagos, and Bancontact.

They even sent in some cool pictures of their office decked out for Black Friday – pretty cool!  Thanks for adding these, guys!  Love the spirit.

Here’s what they had to say:

“SoftShellWeb was founded in 2019 by three friends since childhood. It started out with several servers and a single location in the Netherlands and now it has expanded its footprint into the US and Asia. As of 2020 we have also expanded our footprint with a new office space located in Slovenia, on the sunny side of the Alps! Thanks to the Low end community we have managed to grow and expand our services! We can’t wait to give back to the community that has helped us in this amazing journey.”

They’re a young company but their heart is in the right place and they look to be providing great value.  Give ’em a spin and then please share your experiences below.

Ubuntu 18.04 Swap turns itself off

I allocate a swapfile, and turn it on:

sudo swapon /swapfile

I can see it here:

$ free -h
              total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem:            62G        6.0G        7.1G        6.2G         49G         50G
Swap:          199G        256K        199G

I can see it here:

$ sudo swapon --show
NAME      TYPE SIZE USED PRIO
/swapfile file 200G   0B   -2

I can see it in dmesg:

[373676.694883] Adding 209715196k swap on /swapfile.  Priority:-2 extents:808 across:258359292k SSFS

Yet after some time, it no longer shows…

$ free -g
              total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem:             62           7           0          12          54          42
Swap:             0           0           0

And this

$ sudo swapon --show

Returns nothing.

dmesg gives no error.

It’s like it turned itself off.

dg.differential geometry – Is there a metric on Euclidean space that turns the Helmholtz equation into the Laplace equation?

Is there a Riemannian metric $tilde g$ on $mathbb R^d$ such that
$$tag{1}
Delta_{tilde g}=e^f(Delta +1),$$

for some $fin C^infty(mathbb R^d)$? Here $Delta=partial_{x_1}^2+ldots+partial_{x_d}^2.$

If there is such a $tilde g$, it cannot be conformal to the standard Euclidean metric $g=delta_{ij}$. Indeed, if $tilde g = e^{2phi}g$, then
$$Delta_{tilde g} = e^{-2phi} left(Delta + (d-2)g^{ij}frac{partial phi}{partial x_j}frac{partial}{partial x_i}right),$$
and either $d=2$, or the second summand in the round brackets is constant only in the trivial case $nabla phi=0$. In both cases (1) cannot be satisfied.

performance tuning – Finding the number of appearances that a number turns up in a certain list of numbers

I have the following code:

max = 4000; Clear[cnt];
cnt[_] = 0; Do[b = Binomial[n + 2, k + 1];
 If[b <= max, cnt[b] += 1], {n, 0, max}, {k, 1, n - 1}]; sel =
 Select[Table[{b, cnt[b]}, {b, 1, max}], #[[2]] >= 1 &];
a[n_] := Select[sel, #[[2]] >= n &][[1, 1]];
Quiet@Array[a, 10^3] /. {}[[1, 1]] -> Nothing

The code is finding the number of appearances that a number turns up in a certain list of numbers. Is there a way to speed up this calculation, because it takes a while.

20.04 – Switching the input language turns my screen blank

This weird bug appeared after upgrade from 18.04.5 to 20.04.1 and happens only in non-Gnome environments. What I found out by lots of experimenting:

  • In KDE, Xfce and LXQt (all current versions from Focal repos) I can switch from English to my native language without a hitch, but going back to English turns my screen blank. It wakes up when I shake the mouse, like a screensaver.

  • In regular Gnome 3, screen does not go blank but the switch takes an unreasonably long time – about a full second. In fact, it was slow on 18.04 too.

  • In Gnome Flashback there are no glitches at all.

ArcWiki says Gnome uses iBus differently than the other environments, so there must be some logic here. Yet, I fail to understand what switching the keyboard layout has to do with the screen in the first place. Any clues?

WiFi hotspot always turns on

i got a question… why does my WiFi hot spot always turn on? I already tried to reboot and everything but still doesn’t work. any help?

dnd 5e – Does Empowered Spell metamagic work over multiple turns?

Not only can, but must

I’m not sure I agree with this, but I offer it for community consideration as one possible interpretation.

Empowered Spell says it may be used “when you roll damage for a spell.”

When you rolled the first round of damage dice, you were rolling damage for the spell. Your decision of how many and which dice to re-roll (up to your Cha limit of 5) needs to be made at that time. That decision can include subsequent damage dice that may or may not occur.

However, if you decide at that time to allocate two rerolls to the second round of damage, and that damage later takes place, you must then reroll two dice. If, for example, your second round of damage results in a max roll of 24, you can’t then not use the rerolls. You have already decided that you would do them, and now you can’t forgo.

unity – Object turns white

Any idea why this character turns white in Game window with Play button on and off? The character is fine when the animations are not present but the file with the animations shows the character as white and the animation doesn’t start even though the animator animation bar looks as though the animation should be running.

enter image description here

I’ve uploaded the character file at the link below, basically if this character is dragged in a new project the Game tab will show it as all white.
