The Damage Resistances for a 5E Imp are: Cold; Bludgeoning, Piercing, and Slashing from Nonmagical Attacks that aren't Silvered.

Would this Imp be resistant to damage from a Mace of Warning?

  • You could argue “Yes” because any Weapon of Warning should be considered a magical weapon, and therefore the damage it deals is considered magical.
  • You could argue “No”, with a liberal interpretation of the resistances, because the mace is not silvered.

ecdsa – Are Schnorr signatures quantum-computer resistant?

No, ECDSA and EC-Schnorr, as well as related schemes like EdDSA, all belong to the class of elliptic curve cryptography. Their security is based on the assumption that the EC discrete logarithm is unfeasibly hard to compute. This assumption is not true if a sufficiently strong general purpose quantum computer would exist.

Quantum resistant signature algorithms do exist, but they all rely on very large signatures – which may make them unfeasibly expensive for purposes like Bitcoin. Furthermore, much less research exists into features on top (like homomorphic derivation like BIP32 uses, or aggregation), making them effectively a step backwards in terms of functionality if we’d adopt that instead.

However, I am not very worried about this. Quantum Computing in general has a very long way to go before it comes even close to tackling problems like solving discrete logarithms for curves of our size. A general-purpose QC with several 1000s of qbits would be needed, and it is not even known whether it is physically possible to build such a computer.

Are fire resistant / immune creatures resistant / immune to dehydration / sunburn?

Sandstorm It says the following about fire resistance, in the context of environmental hazard:

A character with a fire resistance spell or effect applies this resistance to both lethal and non-lethal damage from high temperatures.

From someone with a lower fire resistance ring It has 10 fire resistance, and no temperature band can do more than 10 non-lethal damage, and non-lethal damage from heat exposure is what causes heat stroke, that person is immune to heat stroke and corresponding fatigue as long as they keep their ring on. (Maybe the exact timing of things is not specified if they remove the ring, but that doesn't particularly matter to me)

That's great, but then the next section on Sandstorm Covers dehydration.

… the creature must perform a successful Constitution check every hour (DC 10, +1 for each previous check) or take 1d6 points of non-lethal damage. In particularly hot environments (those above 90 ° F), the time a creature can go without water before doing Constitution checks is reduced

Nothing there mentions that fire resistance has an impact on the amount of time before dehydration checks begin. Nor does it say that the damage is "from high temperatures," which is what the first quote says reduces fire resistance.

Does this mean that a half-red half-demon dragon, with fire immunity and fire resistance 10, dehydrates from high temperatures in exactly the same way as Joe Average, the human?

Same deal with sunburn:

If a character is trapped in the sun and completely unprotected … the character is lightly sunburned and takes 1 point of non-lethal damage. After 3 more hours of exposure, the character develops severe sunburn and immediately takes 2d6 points of non-lethal damage and a -2 penalty on Fortress saves to avoid damage or fatigue from heat hazards until non-lethal damage heal.

The damage here is not "due to high temperatures" either. And even if it were, the penalty on Fortitude saves is not even "damage". So does this mean that our scaly demon once again suffers from sunburn as fast and as severely as Mr. Human, or at least some reduced form of severe sunburn, despite being able to withstand the literal surface temperatures of the Sun?

dnd 5e – Is Baba Lysaga supposed to be resistant to magic?

In the Curse of Strahd campaign, Baba Lysaga's description (pages 228/229) includes the following text for one of his characteristics / abilities:

Mother's night gifts. The goddess Mother Night has bestowed magical gifts on Baba Lysaga as rewards for her unremitting devotion to Strahd. Its skin has the resistance of stone, it is resistant to harmful magic and it is protected against divination magic..

However, within the stat block, their tough skin and resistance to magic are not mentioned. In fact, the name of the function that protects against divination magic is also slightly different:

Mother's Night Blessing. Baba Lysaga is protected against divination magic, as if he were protected by a non-detection spell.

Are there any misprints or clarifications on whether this character is supposed to have any additional defenses within his stat block? CR11 suggests that it should be more difficult to kill.

ssh: can I make the putty more resistant to my laptop changing access point?

I used to live in a house with a wifi hotspot and my putty connections generally remained active for days at a time. Now we have a bigger house and 4 APs, and I find that when the laptop wanders from one to the other, the putty is immediately disconnected. All APs have the same SSID / password, I don't think it's relevant anyway.

I have ping 1.1.1.1 -t it runs at a Windows command prompt and only 3 or 4 fail to change so the change is pretty quick.

I have put Seconds between keepalives putty for 5.

In /etc/ssh/sshd_config I have put ClientAliveInterval 5 Y ClientAliveCountMax 12.

Also, my router assigns a static IP to my router, so the local IP address does not change.

What else do I need to do, or just not possible with putty?

In the past, I've noticed oddities like being able to put my laptop to sleep and the putty sometimes still works when I wake it up again … so I feel like a simple AP switch shouldn't be a problem!

private key: a security need for Bitcoin to fork into a quantum resistant algorithm in a few years?

In just a few years, I think there will be quantum that break asymmetric ciphers, and Bitcoin is based on other asymmetric ones like public key cryptography, right? Symmetric algorithms are supposed to be safe.

The question is for experts here:

1) What components of the bitcoin blockchain would be exposed to quantum attacks?

2) Are these components relevant to the complete functionality of the blockchain if they "break" or are simply a minor nuisance but do not have a significant negative impact?

3) What do bitcoin (core) developers do now brainstorm, what could be feasible methods to make these previous components more resistant against quantum?

dnd 5e: Can the hypnotic gaze be used across the resistant sphere?

Can the enchanting sorcerer's level 2 hypnotic gaze skill be used through a rugged sphere?

The ability seems only to require the Assistant to see the objective, and the objective to see or hear the Assistant:

… choose a creature that you can see less than 5 feet from you. If the target can see or hear you …

I guess Resilient Sphere does not block vision or sound, but it definitely obstructs the path from the Assistant to the target. In addition, it is written that

Nothing, no physical objects, energy or other spell effects, can cross the barrier

So, does the hypnotic gaze cross the sphere or not?

dnd 5e: Can the resistant sphere contain several creatures?

As DM, I want to know if more than one creature can fit inside Otiluke resistant dial, Rules as written.

Here is the scenario:

A game of four medium creatures walks through the old sewers of a city. Suddenly, the sound of gallons of water running through the tunnel, the party only has moments to react before the camera floods with water. Thinking quickly, the group gathers and the magician throws Resistant dial on them to protect them from water.

Rules as written, this would not work. The spell says that:

"The dial has no weight and is large enough to contain he creature or object inside. "

This quote, and the continued use of the singular language instead of the plural, largely implies that it is only intended to affect one creature at a time.

However, using the Cool Rule I allow it, since the description of the spell also says that it is:

"A sphere of bright force (that) encloses a creature or object of large or smaller size within the range."

This means that if the four medium creatures get into a large box and throw Resistant dial In the box, this would have worked. That is because although the creatures are in the box, the spell is cast on the box, not on the creatures. (It is a strange technicality but it is within the rules, so I, like DM, allow it to be done without the box).

It would seem silly not to allow the contents of a container to be affected by the spell when the container itself is affected. That sets a precedent that, if you cast the spell on a chest, all content will fall as the spell can only contain a single object, which is the chest. Throwing it in a bottle would cause the liquid to spill, since it only casts the spell into the container. Casting the spell over a cage could free a creature inside it, since the spell was cast over the cage, not the creature.

So, with this in mind, can multiple creatures be contained within the Resilient Sphere within the rules?


Here are some rhetorical questions as food for thought:

If the spell was cast in a swarm, what would happen? Would the entire medium swarm be affected, or would only a small beast be affected in that swarm?

What if the spell was cast at the time a creature entered another creature's space? Or when a creature was fighting or riding another creature?

If the spell was cast on an Ocher Jelly that was then divided into the Resistant dialWould the spell end because it can only contain a single creature?

Could the spell be cast in a large box that had a huge creature tight inside it, since creatures can squeeze into a space smaller in size than they are? Or would the spell fail since it can only affect creatures or large or smaller objects?

Disclaimer for any potential VTC-ers. These rhetorical questions are not part of my question and do not need to be answered, they are simply meant to make the potential responder consider multiple possibilities before answering. This does not make my question broader, since I am not looking for answers, and therefore, any answer that focuses on answering only these rhetorical questions should be marked as "not an answer."

dnd 5e – If a creature has an advantage against spells and magic effects, is it resistant to magic attacks?

The advantage has to do with throwing the dice, the resistance has to do with reducing the damage in half.

An easy illustrative example is a dwarf

Dwarf resistance. It has an advantage when saving throws against poison and has resistance against poison damage (explained in Chapter 9). {Basic rules, p. fifteen}

The dwarf rolls 2d20 every time he has to make a saving throw against the poison. Because a dwarf is resistant to poison, any poison damage it receives is reduced by half.

Resistance

If a creature or an object is resistant to one type of damage, damage of that type is reduced by half. {Chapter 9}

Advantage and disadvantage

… skill check, attack roll or salvation throw It is modified by special situations called advantage and disadvantage. … When you have advantage
or disadvantage, you roll a second d20 when you roll. Use the
higher of the two rolls if you have an advantage, and use the lower roll
if you have a disadvantage

What to share with your DM of the rules

A creature with advantage in the saving throws versus the spells / magic still rolls the save throw: 2d20, choose the highest score. Resistance is applied separately once the amount of damage is determined by the success or failure of the saving throw.

Resistance and then vulnerability apply after all other damage modifiers. {Basic rules, p. 78}

Dwarf example:

Exceka the dwarf is hit by the tail of a giant scorpion, and the damage roll for poison is 24. Exceka had an advantage in the saving throw. She takes a 3 and a 19, so she saves. The damage is reduced by half. She receives 12 damages, except that she has resistance to poison! Then, she receives half damage: 6 HP of damage is the end result.

Demon Example: Balor

That Magic resistance It means that this monster is explicitly explained in the statistics block of the demon.

Magic Resistance: The balor has the advantage of saving spells against spells and other magical effects. (MM, p. 55)

That is different from the Damage Resistors in the statistics block (MM p. 55) that says

Damage resistance Cold, lightning, blows, punctures and cuts of non-magical weapons

And that is different from

Damage Immunities Fire position

And that is different from

Condition immunities Poisoned

To illustrate: Balor is hit by cold damage by Snow storm spell out

Each creature in the cylinder must make a Dexterity save throw. A creature takes 2d8 of blunt damage and 4d6 of cold damage in a failed save, or half damage in a successful one.

A sorcerer cast the spell and cast damage: 12 strokes and 16 cold.

Final note

The damage is by type. Magic is not a type of damage (but it is a type of attack or effect). The types of damage are in basic rules p. 78, and in PHB p. 196:
