raindog308’s Journeys: BuyVM, Pony-Powered in the LowEnd Market for 10+ Years!

Most of the companies appearing on LowEndBox submit offers requesting publication.  From time to time, we bring you other companies that our staff has discovered over the years.  Our goal is to provide a full range of options for you to consider in the vast LowEnd marketplace.  Enjoy!

Remember the first few Apple iPhones?  People stood in line – sometimes all night – outside Apple stores in order to be one of the first to lay their hands on them.  Believe it or not, there was a time when 128MB OpenVZ VMs were the same.

Ten years ago, if you wanted a 128 from BuyVM, you had to get up at 2am and wait until Fran (BuyVM’s owner, Francisco Dias) released stock.  There were web sites tracking BuyVM stock and people would wait to pounce on on a free server.

The $15/year 128MB was an early BuyVM innovation.  They also specialized in storage servers before they were popular.  Since their beginning, they’ve added innovations regularly, including

  • DDoS protection in the LowEnd market.  More common now, but it wasn’t when they started.  Many people offering DDoS-protected VPS today are just OVH resellers, but BuyVM has their own contracted DDoS protection.
  • Block storage volumes (“slabs” in their parlance)
  • Anycast VPSes
  • Offloaded SQL.  This was a cool add-on which allowed you to purchase a modest VPS (such as one of their 128s) and then offload your SQL to a much beefier dedicated SQL box.  They still offer this service for $1/mo.
  • Custom control panel.  Their panel – called Stallion – is completely home-developed, giving them a platform to continue innovating.

The company has had hiccups over the years, but has always responded well.  A large power failure in Las Vegas once knocked a lot of VMs offline but the company responded with full transparency is a case study in how to handle such issues.  There’s been some drama over BuyVM’s commitment to free speech – usually when someone in the mainstream media discovers they’re hosting something that particular media source doesn’t like (or BuyVM’s TOR Exit-friendly policies cause people to jump to wrong conclusions).  But these minor problems aside, they’ve been a solid provider for more than a decade.

With service in Las Vegas (NV), New York (NY), and Luxembourg, BuyVM continues to grow and move from strength to strength.  And the odds are to get a VM, you won’t need to get up at 2am to wait in line!

Q&A with Nexus Bytes founder Nahian about the hosting industry and a first customer approach: low-end box

Last month we spoke to Dustin Cisneros, CEO of RackNerd, and today, as we continue our interview-style Q&A sessions, we sit down with Nahian, CEO of Nexus Bytes. So let's start with the interview!

What can you tell us about yourself, how did you get to where you are today and your role in your company?

I am a lifelong retailer. I have owned and operated several successful retail chains in 6 different states between 2010-2018. In mid-2018, I sold all of my retail businesses so that I could spend quality time with my friends and family and focus on self-improvement. I currently work as a franchise consultant and regional sales director for a major national telecommunications company. I have been in the hosting world since early 2008, I used to own and operate HostCell.net, a very famous free web hosting website in the days before. In 2011, I teamed up with one of my cousins and together, we changed the brand and created Ninja Hawk. After successfully operating under the new brand for 2 more years, due to internal conflicts, the brand was sold to TMZ VPS and for a time I took some time off the Internet and focused on increasing my retail presence.

However, being a lifelong geek, my passion for the hosting industry never died. In 2016, I opened my latest retail store in Hartford Connecticut, and after successfully launching the latest location, I wanted to do something slightly different that would make my inner geek happy, and in mid-2016, Nexus Bytes LLC was born. Nexus Bytes initially served local accounting and retail companies in CT and NY, where we offered and provided hosting and IT infrastructure and powered multiple local small brands and family businesses.

In 2018, when I sold all my businesses, I wanted to do more with my free time and launched ServedEZ, a free and free web hosting service from Nexus Bytes LLC. It was created as a charity project, to offer something to the Internet community, providing an easy starting ground for those who need a safe place to host their website / projects and cannot afford to pay.

In mid-2019, I wanted to do a little more. Being an entrepreneur for life, I realized that it was time to take Nexus Bytes to the next level and expand our range of services to a global audience, which would complement our ServedEZ brand. While it may seem like a one-man show, I do have a dear friend who helps me every now and then and completes when I'm away / unavailable, to ensure that our family members (Clients) are never left unattended.

What is the most important feature that makes your company unique in today's evolving market landscape?

I have created my businesses (retail and online), with 2 key things in mind,

-Customer first
Me and we (Nexus Bytes LLC) call our clients, family members. Because family comes first and so do our clients. We focus on ensuring that our customers are satisfied, not only by offering consistent service, but also by treating everyone with kindness and respect. We go above and beyond to make sure that our family members are happy and get the best value for their money.

Although we are a business, we are also consumers and we want to offer everything we expect our suppliers to offer us, in terms of customer service and solution solution. Which is not only responding quickly using written responses, but actually reading and understanding customer requests, analyzing their requirements and honestly responding to inquiries with a personal touch.

We offer exclusive "Family Benefits" for current members of our family. We will continue to add more to the list as we have some details ;)

-A cutting-edge technology and a promise to evolve over time.

We understand the need to not only be stable, but also fast and constant! We are one of the first hosts in the LE community to offer a performance-packed, Ryzen-powered VPS and we continue to offer them in the 4 locations we operate in (NYC Metro, Miami, Florida, LA, California and FSN, Germany: https: //nexusbytes.com/network.html). We will continue to evaluate new technologies and introduce them to our family members as we feel they fit. :)

We understand that money does not grow on trees and we will make sure that the money you are spending with us is not just an expense, but an investment suitable for your budget.

Why should customers trust you and your business?

I am extremely real and approachable and am always available to my existing and potential clients. I will not start by saying the cookie cutter, "We saw a vacuum and we are here to fill it with spray foam." Our goal is not to become the largest hosting provider out there. We are here to set the gold standard for web hosting customer service. We respect our no-questions-asked money-back policy and welcome everyone to try us out.

We do not compete with prices. However, we are extremely well known for offering some crazy deals here and there, we are not the "cheapest" because we are definitely affordable and quality is something we don't compromise on. We do not subscribe to more than we can offer and we are extremely transparent. When you want to get the best return on your money, you should join Nexus Bytes: Affordable Boutique Servers, an invaluable personalized experience. Your web hosting partner.

What advice would you give to business owners today, or those who aspire to become one?

Always remember where you come from. Stay close to your root. Always remember how you felt when you had your first registration and how you treated your first 10 customers, when you were a brand with no name. Be humble. While you can be good, but there will always be someone who is better than you. Treat the others as you want the others treat you.

Keep an open mind. Ask for comments, listen to those comments, and don't be defensive. Don't be arrogant and respectful, not only with your clients, but also with your colleagues and other companies. Stay professional, stay calm, and be transparent. Difficult times will come and you may feel that things are not going as you anticipated. Do not panic. Try to be creative and focus on keeping your head up.

Never compete on price. You cannot compete with someone with a deep pocket, nor can you compete with someone, who is here to make quick cash, default on your bill and deadpool after a couple of months. Concentrate on building a brand, the money will follow.

You will make mistakes. Those mistakes won't make you a bad person or a bad business. However, not learning from those mistakes will. Difficult times will come! It's just a matter of when. Prepare for the worst.

Would you recommend the hosting industry as an opportunity for entrepreneurs?

It is a difficult industry and it is very saturated. But at the same time, there is always room for someone new. As long as you offer something, that's unique enough to add additional value. Don't be a forest theme template, with a whmcs / blesta install and a paypal account.

Open your notebook and calculator. Make notes. Do your calculations correctly. Can you survive 1 year, with 0 clients and no incoming income? If the answer is yes, go ahead. If the answer is no, you are not ready. There is nothing in between.

What do you enjoy the most about your role?

It's exciting. It keeps my mind active. I enjoy and admire the love I receive from my Nexus Bytes family members. It is your love and care that keeps the brand growing!

What is more difficult for you?

Clients, who handle a hard bargain. I am in favor of offering a good deal. However, asking several times to equalize or lower the price, when I made / made it completely clear that we can't do it. We will work with any existing and potential clients, within our limits, however, at the same time, we hope that the person on the other side will also work with us. :)

Both personally and professionally, what guiding principles support you?

I live by two sayings,

"It takes two hands to clap, but one to slap"
“Today is what we have, now is where we are. Let's make today the best day of our life and now the best time "

I was raised in an environment where I was taught to be honest, humble, and respectful. And i will never forget.

Tell me about some of the exciting new things you are working on at your company?

It won't be fun if I spill all the beans now ;)

. We continue to analyze our business and market needs, and we will continue to provide fun retail-style elements to make "Web Hosting Great Again"

Final ideas and something you would like to add?

I hope and pray that the Covid-19 crisis will end soon and I wish everyone reading this a happy and prosperous life and the same for their loved ones.

We, Nexus Bytes LLC, thank the community for continuing to support us and shower us with their love and blessings. We strive to be your favorite host and appreciate all feedback. This forum and blog is filled with many legendary hosts and providers, we look forward to and thank you for being amazing.

Jon, thanks so much for taking your time and interviewing me. I'm excited to see what the next holds for us both. :)

PS: don't forget to make a backup ;)

Next VPS Review Series: Low-End Box

April was a busy month for Low End Box as we launched many new initiatives:

  1. The tutorials are back! We will post one or two every month
  2. Every month we will ask important questions to our users through surveys
  3. We have launched an Editorial section with articles on VPS, web hosting and the industry in general.
  4. We have started a monthly series of Q / A style interviews with industry and community leaders.

And now we are launching a Low-end box VPS review series, chaired by community member Low End Talk @jsg. Reviews will be done exclusively by @jsg, who has already completed quite a few reviews in the Low End Talk past, and both providers and users appreciated his fairness. Once each review is complete, we will post it in the Low End Box and Low End Talk.

Each review will be independent, which means that it is not a direct comparison, but an in-depth analysis of the service by each provider.

We actively request that providers who wish to participate in our first review be published in the coming weeks. All we need is one of your VPS services for a single month. Utilization levels will be low and your participation is appreciated. Interested providers should leave a comment below or send a message to @jsg directly on Low End Talk.

As always, we look forward to your feedback! Remember to vote and then leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Infofractal.io – E5-2620v2 / 16GB RAM / RAID in Valdivia, Chile for $ 48 / month – Low-end box

infofractalInfofractal's Judemir submitted its first offer to the Low End Box for a really cool dedicated Intel E5-2620v2 dedicated server hosted in Chile for under $ 50 / mo! This is one of the first times that we present an offer hosted in Chile, so this dedicated server offer is unique. They run their own data center that uses new technology to reduce energy consumption.

Infofractal is a company registered in the country of Chile (ID # 76.809.612-0). Their terms of service are available on their website for your review. PayPal and Crypto are accepted for payment to clients outside Chile.

In his own words:

“We are a new data center company that believes that the current trend to build huge data centers and release tons of kWh as waste heat is unsustainable. We design a custom container data center where we can use the waste heat to dry certified firewood, a renewable fuel that is still expensive here in Chile.

We are mainly a two-man team, my associate (Juan Cifuentes) and I come from an academic background, and we worked using and managing HPC groups for 5 years before leaving the academic world, due to how saturated it is. One of the problems that affects HPC clusters is all the heat generated, since the servers are actually used and not only remain idle like web servers. So we thought, why not just build the data center where all that heat is useful? So now we build it in the south of Chile, 900 km from Santiago. We encourage our users to use as much CPU as they can. We can also provide special support for users who want to perform HPC tasks! Infiniband really makes any cluster application very easy, it makes gigabit feel like dsl. "

HostNOC – Managed Xeon L5520 / 64GB RAM Dedicated server offer starting at $ 139.95 / mo – Low-end box

HostNoc submitted an offer on their recently managed line of dedicated servers and we wanted to draw your attention to this offer. Their dedicated dedicated server for beginners is $ 139.95 / mo (usually $ 279.99). The offered port speeds are 1 Gbit / second and the bandwidth is not measured which makes it a pretty good value considering that the storage is a 1TB SSD.

Because this host is relatively new in terms of Low End Box exposure, if you choose to order from them, we encourage our readers to share their thoughts below in the comment section below. Their WHOIS is private and they have been in business for two years, so we recommend making longer payments than monthly for these reasons.
