case studies – Perceived speed: single question, multiple screens versus multiple questions, fewer screens

In our phone application, when we have multi-step flows, we usually have a question on the screen (except when it is obviously related, that is, city and state).

Recently, the people with whom I have been working have proposed that it is better to have several questions on the same screen, since there will be fewer steps / screens to finish the task. I have always thought that in an application, the unique question pattern "feels" faster for me, since I feel that I am always progressing.

Has anyone done any study on the subject? Rules of the game?
