Are there laws preventing top organization employees from leaving the organizations to start their own similar business

I have a friend who works as an overseer of a company , and he has learnt many things about the business of the company .
He wants to leave the company to start his own type of the company’s business , and he is afraid the company may sue him .
Are there laws that ban employees from doing so ?
